The noblemen and aristocrats of the 19th Century were frequent guests, coming by train. The first mountain guides came from the Alta Pusteria Valley. Due to their unique geological circumstances, the limestone mountains surrounding Toblach/Dobbiaco, Sexten/Sesto, and Niederdorf/Villabassa are nature protection areas whose fame has spread throughout the world. Because of their bizarre appearance, the Haunold / Rocca dei Baranci, Dreischuster / Tre Scarperi, and Birkenkofel / Croda dei Baranci group, the "Eleven" group, the "Twelve" group, and especially the "Three Peaks" have won great prominence in international films.
