Bruneck/Brunico
Bruneck/Brunico

The medieval town of Bruneck/Brunico – about 30 minutes by car from Toblach/Dobbiaco – is a jewel in the crown of the Dolomites. With narrow, pastel-colored streets, picturesque bridges, and inviting pubs, the town is also the perfect place for shopping on an international level. You can window-shop all you like, or maybe drop into one of the many little stores offering a great variety of interesting merchandise.
Hint: Try one of the many fine wines available at the Enotheque Bernardi at the Rienzdamm; enjoy a cup of coffee at the artists gallery at the Lamplwirt, or stop by for a visit at Moessmer's, a manufacturer wool felt.
Things to do and see in Bruneck/Brunico:
- The Dietenheim/Teodone Ethnological Museum
The South Tyrolean Provincial Museum of Ethnology is an open-air museum. Its two dozen original buildings are reminders of the lifestyles of bygone days, and give visitors a good idea of what it was like to live back then. The "heart" of the museum is the Mair am Hof – a farmhouse built between 1690 and 1700 by the Counts of Sternbach to replace the old farmhouse built by the Counts of Gorizia.

- Municipal Museaum
The Municipal Museum of Graphics was opened in 1995 in the restored and adapted post stalls in which (in earlier centuries) the horses had been feed and the mail wagons were kept for travelers. In the first floor, next to the lobby, there is a permanent exhibition of Late Gothic works by Michael Pacher, his colleague Friedrich Pacher, and his disciples Simon and Veit von Taisten.

- Bruneck/Brunico Castle
Regardless of the direction from which you approach the town, the first thing you see is always the big, beautiful bishop's stronghold, the Bruneck/Brunico Castle. It is situated on an easily accessible hill above the town and looks down on all of the houses of the "Old Town" – as though it was still on guard over the lives and security of the townspeople.
The main entrance to the castle is the South Portal, which used to be reached via a drawbridge. The castle's interior courtyard: In the half round tower, the staircase leads to the upper rooms. In the right tract, you'll find the prince's rooms; in the left tract, there is an apartment belonging to the administrator and, originally, the personnel.
- The Stadtgasse (main street)
The Stadtgasse is the main street of Bruneck/Brunicos. It is lined on both sides with picturesque houses, many of which are still adorned with old frescoes. Please note the various different designs of gables.
The houses along the Stadtgasse are all residential buildings, in a few stories of which shops and pubs have been relocated.
